Acting General Manager Omar Al-Bashir al-Turabi holds an MSc degree in Political Science from the University of Sharjah. His Master’s thesis — Impact of Jihadi Movements on Nation-States’ Internal Affairs: the Cases of ISIS & Boko Haram — provides a critical evaluation of prevalent counterterrorism strategies.
Mr. Elturabi also holds a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sharjah, where he also founded and led the editorial team of the students magazine Ittihad in 2009.
Mr. Elturabi joined Al Mesbar Center in 2010 as a researcher. He became Deputy Editor-in-Chief in 2012, then Deputy Head of the Consulting Team in 2014. In July 2018, he was appointed Acting General Manager of the Center. He meanwhile continues to serve as editor-in-chief of the Center’s monthly book series.
He has served as an advisor on cultural affairs for a broad number of authorities, agencies, and clients. He has helped establish several websites concerned Gulf and pan-Arab issues, in addition to Sudanese TV channels. He also writes regularly for a number of Sudanese, Gulf and international newspapers and magazines, including Al-Majalla, Asharq Alawsat, Al-Khaleej Magazine, and the newspaper Al-Sahafa.
Mr. Elturabi has published more than 30 peer-reviewed studies and 40 scholarly articles, in addition to hundreds of newspaper articles. He has two books in print: The Impact of Breaking Religious Tradition on the Rise of Contemporary Jihadi Movements and Assessment of Iraqi and Nigerian Policies in Combating Terrorism.
Mr. Elturabi has participated in a number of international conferences, workshops and events, including his presentation and research paper at the conference titled “The Future of Coexistence in the Shadow of Violent Extremism: Viewpoints from Europe and Arab World.” (The conference was organized by Al Mesbar, in collaboration with UNESCO, at the latter’s Paris headquarters in February, 2015, following the tragic events of Charlie Hebdo.
The titles of Mr. Elturabi’s published studies and research include: “Why Researchers Do Not Agree When it Comes to Combating Terrorism”, published on the Al Mesbar website in January 2018; “Can Terrorist Organizations Die? How? Directions of Events,” published by Future Centre in June 2015; and “Can Secession be Al-Qaeda’s Opening to South Sudan?” published in the book Islamist Parties in Sudan, from Establishment to Secession”, published by Al Mesbar in 2010.
